FurnitureA Fine 17th Century Tortoiseshell & Ebony Cabinet On Stand

A fine late 17th Century Flemish cabinet on stand. The red-stained tortoiseshell with ebony, moulded cornice and ormolu gallery, above a panelled drawer and door enclosing a fitted, perspectived interior with a mirrored colonnade and chequered floor in ivory, and flanked by cabochon-moulded drawers.  There is ivory string work throughout and one can see the original colour of the rosewood panels by comparing the inside central door to the outside, where it is sun bleached. This piece retains its original ormolu cabinet fittings, the base is later and there have been restorations and replacements over the past three hundred odd years.

This brilliantly-coloured Flemish cabinet is typical of the highly intricate pieces to have come out of Flanders in the baroque period. It could very easily sit comfortable in a contemporary room scheme as a conversation piece.
